£225,000 FOR A LAND ROVER. HAS ANYONE TOLD THE SHEEP?
THE £225,000 COTSWOLDS SCHOOL-RUN CAR

There are Land Rover Defenders. And then there are £225,000 Land Rover Defenders. Autelier creates bespoke restored Defender 110s starting at £225,000, turning one of Britain's most famous utilitarian vehicles into something considerably more luxurious. We're talking Connolly leather, quilted Alcantara, bespoke metalwork, 20-inch forged wheels and — because apparently opening a normal cool box would be intolerable — a refrigerated centre console. Which creates a slight philosophical problem. The Defender became an icon because it was tough, practical and perfectly happy being covered in mud. At £225,000, would you actually dare drive this one through a hedge? Dad thinks a Defender should contain muddy boots, dog hair and something from the farm shop that's leaked. Harriet is rather more interested in the fridge. So is this the ultimate Cotswolds car — or has someone taken the humble Land Rover Defender and made it completely ridiculous?
Why it's ridiculous
Because £225,000 is an extraordinary amount of money for a Land Rover designed to get muddy. It's beautifully made. It's unmistakably British. And we'd quite like one. But once your Defender has Connolly leather, quilted Alcantara and its own refrigerator, there's a reasonable chance the roughest terrain it'll encounter is a particularly aggressive speed bump outside Daylesford. And that makes it magnificently Cotswolds ridiculous.

“It's got a fridge between the seats. Finally, somewhere to keep the Waitrose hummus while crossing a field.”
